Meet Shaka The Pit Bull Police Dog
Shaka the pit bull was nearly euthanized at an overcrowded shelter in New York.
A pit bull advocate recognized her police potential and rescued her.
She contacted the K-9 Detection Training Unit at Washington State Patrol Academy.
She enrolled Shaka there and she graduated with flying colors.
Shaka worked for the Washougal Police Department for four years as a drug detection
dog before their canine unit had to unfortunately downsize.
Shaka was offered up for relocation. Billy Well’s Milwaukee Police Department in
Oregon jumped at the chance to be selected. Billy Wells was chosen to be her partner
because he had experience with bomb-sniffing dogs.
“I’m certain if she could figure out a way to drive my patrol car, I’d be completely out
of the picture,” joked Wells.
It is Shaka’s job to keep drugs off the street and she really likes to chew on a hydraulic
rubber hose as her reward for pointing to her target.
