Tom Our Shelter Hero
This video is about an attorney named Tom Ratanavaraha who has been volunteering with the Pasadena Humane Society and SPCA for eight years and spends his time walking pit bulls.
Tom is aware of the misconception pit bulls have as being dangerous dogs when in fact they aren’t.
He says, “The time I have been here I have probably done over 15,000 walks and I’ve never been bit by a pit bull. I have only been bit by a chihuahua.”
It was through Tom’s efforts that this organization started a program to help these dogs get daily walks.
“When I first started volunteering here, we didn’t even have a program where we could take dogs out of their kennels,” Tom said. “Once that program started I tried to take out dogs other people wouldn’t.”
“A lot of people will come in and take out the smaller dogs, the fluffier dogs,” Tom goes on to say. “The pit bulls would be just stuck in their kennels and nobody would work with them.”
Tom was the only one who would walk the pit bulls because they are strong and athletic. They also have a bad reputation for being dangerous and will turn on you but Tom knew this wasn’t true. He knew pit bulls are great dogs.

These pit bulls truly enjoy the time Tom spends with them and look forward to it.
Tom also feels that every dog should be judged on an individual basis not on breed and how they look.
