He meets a beautiful woman named Isabel ( Hayek) who tries to convince him he is living in a simulation. Greg doesn’t remember going into this simulation, so he doesn’t remember the history of this place, or that he's actually married to Isabel, but he recognizes the location: it’s the beautiful lakeside paradise from his drawings. He’s in the middle of a divorce and has just been fired from his job when he meets a mysterious woman at a bar. Fans of "The Matrix" trilogy will recognize, early on, that there are some similarities between those films and "Bliss." I believe everything Salma's character was saying to be 100% true minus killing the one guy to be ok. He can only dream of such a feeling of awe, drawing pictures of a lakeside villa that he sees in his head, all while sitting at his desk for a company called Technical Difficulties. That is what I thought too but sadly I ended up accepting that this was all allegory for addiction and mental illness. For all that Cahill has written, and the intention that he's brought as director, "Bliss" simply does not bring everything together, or achieve its desired high-concept grandiosity. It’s the new world where what was once bad is becoming the new normal and these kinds of movies can be made with what used to be an impossible budget, the technology and distribution model has caught up. I wonder if this was a clue, and if the numbers repeat anywhere else in the movie? If he is stuck in a simulation and this is a very clever movie, then your takeaway from it should be that the whole movie was a PSA about mental illness. The trick is in some inhaling some yellow crystals, and the fact that, according to Isabel, many people at the bar are not "real." But maybe Salma’s character put him in there. 1h 45m. By Stephen Holden. There is a scene in the beginning where a lady is walking in the background and you see copies of her appear twice over. 'Bliss' is a movie filled with anything but "Bliss" tries to tell a compelling, confusing science-fiction story about simulated realities to baffling, ineffective results. Would you remove all worry, all fear, all sadness, all pain? Like the director just added this issue not because he wanted to discuss it, but because its "edgy" and "dark". My husband and I both think this was a great movie but we weren't expecting something so dark and heavy. So I have been thinking about this movie quite a bit. All in all I did somewhat enjoy it but I don’t think it’s a movie I’d really recommend to others. I kind of like the twist that it wasn't sci fi at all though. I believe the Director knows these can be hard to watch and so he dressed it up with scifi. Isabel convinces Greg to hide out with her at her place—a makeshift apartment under the freeway—and uses the time to show Greg that he too can blow things over using his finger. I watched it because I was intrigued with the move trailer but it turns out on the whole it's just not a good movie. Jack Black kills it and all of the child actors do a great job. At least we have the chemistry between Wilson and Hayek, who can render Cahill's more baffling ideas of romance—knocking a bunch of people down at the roller rink—as movie-star indulgence instead of plainly odd. Why would it flicker to the audience with owen wilson already having left the room? I was extremely disappointed. I felt like the story wanted you to question if Greg's experience was "real" but the detail3es surrounding it were too vague and his experience in that world was outside of his character. But someone stuck in a simulation *should* appear as a cautionary tale about mental illness. Both of them are pushing themselves with this project, and to their credit neither of them are overshadowed by inexplicable cameos from Bill Nye the Science Guy and, Cahill is one of the more bleeding-heart sci-fi writer/directors in the business, after ", Ambitious Jupiter’s Legacy Examines Changing Definition of Heroism, Here Today: Alan Zweibel on His Collaborative Friendship with Billy Crystal, Cinema/Chicago's International CineYouth Festival Runs May 6-13, Girls5eva is the First Must-Watch Comedy of the Year. In the early 20th century, while studying world mythology, Joseph Campbell discovered a pattern hidden in every story ever told and he called it “the heroes journey”. I agree with this. The therapist at the end explains the drug Bliss is what they were taking to make them think there was a utopia. A ruthlessly desaturated color palette emphasizes how bad things are, and then Cahill's script makes things worse for Greg—a shocking moment in which he accidentally kills his boss by knocking his head into a table. When she waves her hand, she can knock a tray out of a waiter's hand many feet away. ‘Greg (Owen Wilson) has a boring life,’ we’re told by the colour palette. When they shot that dude for crystal he referred to her as doctor. What made it enjoyable was trying to decide what was real. That was when owen Wilson wasnt even in the room. What is real and what is not within the whimsy of "Bliss"? Jennifer Ouellette - Jan 13, 2021 1:05 am UTC Yeah, there really isn't another way to interpret the film unfortunately. Nick Allen is an Assistant Editor at RogerEbert.com and is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. And on a personal note, I prefer Lil Bliss' overall translation of the C-novel - her translations are really easy to read and follow while Dreams of Jianghu's comes across more technically accurate. As for the "perfect" world being another layer of the simulation, sure, that could be possible, but I don't see how it changes the meaning of the film and its clear representations of addiction. The movie ‘Bliss’ is like rip-off of ‘The Matrix,’ only smarter (and a little less awesome) Owen Wilson, left, and Salma Hayek in “Bliss.” (Hilary Bronwyn Gayle/Amazon Studios) By Not one to just leave a body just lying there, Greg props the body up to a window, behind a curtain, and escapes to a nearby bar. In fact, I would've been fine with this route if they had at the very least made the "otherworld" more believable, and at the end having Greg wind up in as hospital, where his daughter or the police explain he's been on a several week long drug bender with a well-known user turned criminal in the homeless community - Isabel. Who cares? They could have cast anyone but they chose the best people to make this masterclass sci-fi film. There are also other problems with the movie. Favorites, characters, genres, top ten lists, and more. That ends up being my biggest question. Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts, Paddington 2 is the Dark Knight of talking animal family movies. But there were also topics that were just shown and never explored, and the result is more than just hollow, it feels exploitative. The Movie Database (TMDb) is a popular, user editable database for movies and TV shows. Because the synopsis definitely makes this sound like a SciFi Matrix kind of thing where people are in a “simulation”. Late to the party, but came here to say the same. I guess with Bill Nye being in the simulation but not acknowledging that he was means the mental illness explanation makes the most sense. The movie has such a heart throughout all of its jokes and a really nice message about not adhering to society’s expectations and that being okay. I suggest doing the same would affect your experience in a good way. The rest was very ambiguous. To watch the narratives of each weave into each other, it becomes difficult to tell the difference between reality and fiction. One or two scenes I kind of rolled my eyes at but other than those two scenes, I think it was a pretty good horror flick. Would you want to live in a world of perpetual bliss? Owen Wilson must choose between real and fantasy worlds in Bliss trailer Director Mike Cahill also made award-winning 2011 sci-fi film Another Earth . And it makes the opening sequence all that much weirder. After decades of that people thought leaving things in doubt was clever, but I think you’re being convinced that this was all just a cheesy PSA for mental illness proves that this movie, proves that this is *the* best sci-fi “simulation“ movie ever made. Did anyone else realize Greg’s prescription number in the beginning is “897978445590112” then the number Isabel enters on the safe to get the blue crystals is “897978” ? Greg (Owen Wilson) begins the science-fiction film “Bliss” at the end of his rope. Maybe the universe is signaling something to us (or to me, at least) with third sim-film “Bliss,” but I couldn’t tell you what it's trying to say through writer/director Mike Cahill, because this sci-fi movie is so schmaltzy and also pointlessly confusing. Like an episode of CSI:New York, only less vibrant. He almost doesn't want to leave until he starts to see a silhouette of Emily, looking for her dad. It’s unusual for a mainstream sci-fi movie to depending on great acting and casting so much, and it’s also unusual for a mainstream sci-fi movie that depends so much on acting to have what appears to be production value and AAA film craft to it. Sitting and watching Greg just shift about in his chair at the clinic at the end, while I expected some answers (about his wife, his family anything??) I do see some people here conjecturing if the sci-fi part was real - nothing in the movies' film language even hints at that. This movie directed by Ray Lawrence whom known as an famous movie director and have directed many interesting movies with great story telling. Her simplified explanation of how utopia came about is how we today explain how utopia will probably come about and how life in that probable utopia would actually be. At least we have the chemistry between Wilson and Hayek, who can render Cahill's more baffling ideas of romance—knocking a bunch of people down at the roller rink—as movie-star indulgence instead of plainly odd. Hanging emotions on that type of coy plotting doesn’t work, mostly because we’re too busy asking more of the questions—like, “Again, what the hell is going on?” It becomes increasingly difficult to be emotionally present within the simulation of “Bliss,” especially as it demands so much untangling. FYI, Lil Bliss has even translated the side stories and crossovers. Does his boss actually die? Aug. 6, 2009. Thought the movie was going to be about mental illness up until half way through, then I thought it was going to be about the simulation rewriting parts of people’s natural brain with the simulation version, and at the end of it I thought it was deliberately ambiguous but probably was a simulation. It proves this is leagues above any other simulation related movie you can think of, even the ones that leave you in doubt like Inception. Centers on a recently divorced man (Wilson) who meets a woman (Hayek) who lives on the streets and is convinced that the polluted, broken world around them is … What is the point of a simulation movie if they are going to spell it out for you at the end that it was a simulation that they need to escape form, that’s the bullshit Hollywood formula for sci-fi movies, where Tom Cruise figures out it’s a simulation and spends the last 30 minutes finally escaping it. Idea visualizer? This is the central question of the film, if not for ourselves. The story begins in ultra-grainy, washed-out film. There’s just little chance of finding it with Bliss. It was all in his head and most of the movie didn't really "happen" (at least not how we're shown). The story overall was very "vague" without depth to the characters, their stories, or backgrounds. They go to a roller rink and blow people to the ground with their magical finger guns, while solemn and sexy music plays, all the better for images of when they knock skates in the bathroom. Bliss is a film that plays tricks on its audience, leaving viewers as confused as Jane is with her predicament. “Bliss” lacks the power, depth and emotion to change someone’s worldview, but does at least scratch the surface. This is the real world, Isabel tells him, and this is a machine she invented to get cynical people to appreciate how bad things can be. That is the question raised provocatively but very imperfectly in “Bliss,” with Owen Wilson as greg, a gray-spirited low-level worker failing in a soul-killing dead-end job … I think it probably was a simulation and until the writer or director clearly states otherwise I don’t think we can say either way what they intended. And Hayek is even more game, leaning into Isabel’s pushiness with spontaneity and flair in the cloudier world, and positing her as a beacon of brilliance in the brighter one. A truly inspirational film, FINDING JOE takes us on the ultimate heroes journey: the journey of self discovery. The discussion details Förderer’s reading of Cahill’s script, the psychological dynamics of the story and visually representing those themes, the development of the script during prep, production logistics, and employing different camera techniques to establish unique visual identities for the film… was just frustrating and a letdown. I think they would've been better off marketing it more honestly, instead of trying to scalp fans from movies like the tenent and inception, into watching...well, this. I would have liked it more if I knew going in it was a visually enhanced drama about the experience of addict and his Alice-in-Wonderland type journey. Amazon totally marketed this wrong. Cahill is one of the more bleeding-heart sci-fi writer/directors in the business, after "Another Earth" and "I Origins." But this was not that. But there’s an emotional anchor to Greg's newfound err, bliss—Greg’s daughter Emily (Nesta Cooper) is trying to find him, deeply concerned that her father has gone missing. Over all it's a really good twisting movie that makes you second guess but I think they could pull off a follow up film. Bliss did way more than just leaving you in doubt about how it ended; it left you with no doubt. He almost doesn't want to leave until he starts to see a silhouette of Emily, looking for her dad. A tedious 50 minutes into the movie (and as shown in the more exciting trailer), “Bliss” transports Isabel and Greg, via the inhalation of special blue crystals, to a different, more colorful, and sunnier existence. Bliss movie review February 13, 2021 Jeffrey Lyles 0 Comments Bliss, Nesta Cooper, Owen Wilson, ... Cahill at best seems to want to create this thought-provoking sci-fi discussion about the steps people will take to find their peaceful, unbothered place of calm happiness.
