Note that Maroon Creek Road is closed to private vehicles from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. During that period, you must take the shuttle bus ($8/person), which starts from the Aspen Highlands ski resort on the outskirts of Aspen. Gorgeous, gorgeous country down there and I must say, probably the best scenery in the entire state. Start by exploring County Roads 5, 7 and 9 (all 2WD gravel), which offer exceptional views of the Sneffels Range.

Go during summer for lush greenery as far as the eye can see; again in the fall for unparalleled red, yellow and orange foliage; and in spring, when grassy fields are blanketed with alpine wildflowers. Coming back down, I got my speed to 37 miles per hour, which (I'm pretty sure) is my all-time high. On July 4th, we headed to the nearby La Sal Mountains near Moab for some holiday fun. As an alternative, I headed back west to Rifle Falls, and didn’t regret the decision. The shoulder is mostly wide and drivers were courteous, as I gained 2000 feet in elevation to Dallas Divide. The water-drenched plant nearly begged me to stop and photograph it. Now that I’m only a couple hours away, I’m anxious for next summer’s wildflower bonanza to start in the YB Basin area. And during the peak fall season, this location will simply take your breath away. I loved the composition of this one, but wasn’t prepared to be drenched from the mist coming off the fall. I was pleasantly surprised when spring rolled around – the desert actually has a lot of blooms!

While staying in Moab in late July, I made myself get up early one day to do a sunrise shoot and chose the Three Gossips area. To avoid the crowds and create fresher images, walk to the far end of the lake and check out the short nature trail that begins there. On the right, you approach Mount Sneffels (elev. Mount Sneffels from Ralph Lauren’s Double RL Ranch in the San Juan Mountains. I’ve never been very successful with sunbursts, but I think he finally pointed me in the right direction. The backdrop of the lake is a 12,840’ peak on the Divide. Again, I experimented with different focal lengths and compositions. All lead through private property in their lower sections, so you must shoot from the road. Sneffels Traverse: North Pole Hut to Blue Lakes Hut is a 8.5 mile moderately trafficked point-to-point trail located near Placerville, Colorado that features a river and is rated as moderate. I only wish I could have gone a few weeks earlier as the multitudes of cottonwood trees would have been stupendous! Get there well before sunrise, as this is another location that can get crowded.

I also kept an eye open to my surroundings and discovered a neat old fence post and abandoned building, both “with character.”  If you’re familiar with my photography, you know that I love old barns and buildings, so finding this was a treat, especially when it was surrounded by all those beautiful aspens! I was transfixed and almost hypnotized by the beauty of the fresh fallen powder on the evergreens, and couldn’t stop saying “God, this is. In June, I upgraded my camera from the Rebel XTi to a 60D, plus I bought a 24-105 mm lens. For my bike ride, I began in Ridgway and traveled 10.5 miles (one way) As you drive south from Montrose, you gradually draw closer to what is probably the most dramatic skyline in Colorado, and that’s saying a lot. In early March, my husband landed a job interview in Granby, Colorado. What caught my eye on this hillside was the design of the white trunks mixed with the brilliant golds and near oranges of the aspen leaves. I was thrilled to finally find some blooming on part of Mary’s Loop, another trail in the Kokopelli trail system.
