The blaze was reported just before noon on the south side of the hill and quickly grew to four alarms because of hot, dry and windy conditions, South San Francisco police said in a news release. The slope rolls near a residential neighborhood. The South San Francisco fires came less than one month after a four-alarm vegetation fire erupted in Belmont, prompting evacuations of about 40 households. The sign’s white lettering casts the words “SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO THE INDUSTRIAL CITY” into an incline in the San Bruno Mountains.
