In book 1 of the Yoga Sutra, “Samadhi Pada,” Patanjali introduces the concept of samadhi and its stages in verses 17–23, and defines it more completely in sutras 42–51. This is Jivanmukta—liberation while still in a physical body. In the early Buddhist texts, samadhi is also associated with the term samatha (calm abiding). Samadhi is the mind in its most concentrated state and can be compared to normal thought as a laser beam can be compared to normal light. In Nirvikalpa Samadhi, the first thing you feel is that your heart is larger than the universe itself. The sattvic (pure) mind is only aware of its own joy. The Vedas say that everything in the Universe has awareness. Nobody can say that a baby is a partial human being; it is an entire human being. It is being able to maintain the experience of Nirvakalpa Samadhi at all times. However, this is not yet a permanent state and everybody has to return to ordinary consciousness. The various stages of samadhi are actually attempts at commingling oneself with different levels of experience, all which are wholes by themselves. However, through continued practice, you are able to come down from Nirvikalpa Samadhi and immediately function normally in the world. The less-real components, shabda and jñana, fall away completely, while the mind is absorbed in only artha, or form, and loses its awareness of being the knower. Even the ahankara, or ego-sense—despite its power, its pervasive nature, and its seeming solidity—is only a vritti, a single thought of individualized existence. This vritti too can be suppressed, and when this happens the yogi can directly perceive the source of the ahankara: the mahat. In savitarka and nirvitarka, the concentration is on a gross object. If you choose to use them for personal greed and ambition, you may cause harm and stall your spiritual progress. With Samadhi as your goal, you should be regular with your spiritual practices, enjoy the blessings that each day brings, and know that everything will be revealed at the right moment.
