**Doomsday Book** by *Connie Willis* is the best book about time travel that I know of, with the notable exception of "This is how you lose the time war". Following my abject failure with noir wizards, I'm retreating to an audiobook that seems to contain everything I like: lady-protagonists, time travel, semi-distant British history, and plague. SPOILER ALERT - THIS BOOK WAS TERRIBLE - AND I WILL RUIN THE ENDING.
