This Photographer’s Mission Is To Change The Perception Of Pit Bulls

This video is about a photographer named Sophie Gamand who trying to change the way people perceive pit bulls. She wants them to see pit bulls as loving gentle dogs who need loving forever homes.

At first Gamand thought pit bulls were vicious attack dogs who were aggressive and dangerous.

She is not alone in this belief about pit bulls. 500 jurisdictions have passed laws placing restrictions on pit bulls and and every year one million are euthanized in shelters far greater than any other breed.

But then something happened that changed Gamand’s belief about pit bulls. After volunteering at animal shelters and rescue groups she found that pit bulls are not attack dogs like she was led to believe by the media. They are loving gentle dogs when treated with kindness who are misunderstood and have a bad reputation they don’t deserve. They have to be made vicious.

“They are so loving so gentle it’s kind of crazy to think the public image they have and the reality of the kind of dog they are,” Gamand told CBS.

Gamand knew something had to be done to save these pit bulls so she started “Pit Bull Flower Power.” As a photographer she goes into rescue shelters and takes photos of pit bulls. She places beautiful flower crowns that she makes herself on their heads and then takes their photos while they are sitting and looking directly into the camera in front of beautiful backdrops. She then edits these photos to bring out their beautiful eyes and distinct features. She wants to show the public these pit bulls inner beauty: how gentle and loving they are and all they want is a forever home.

What Gamand is doing is working. Many of these pit bulls who otherwise would never have been adopted have been adopted. For instance Brownie’s photo was seen by someone and he was adopted and given a loving forever home after having little hope of being adopted after spending two years in a shelter. Shortly thereafter Pickles was also adopted.

We recently adopted a pit bull that was on its way to the shelter. She is the sweetest, most loving and gentle dog. They are extremely smart and easy to train. We love her so much. I hope more people will see how special they really are
